HAVANA HERITAGE AND HISTORY SOCIETY’S SHADE TOBACCO MUSEUM
Founded in 1906, Havana was initially driven by the shade tobacco’s economic engine, as was most of Gadsden County, Florida. On October 7, 2018, Havana was proud to welcome this new museum to downtown historic Havana. It is the perfect place to learn about the history of this industry and the community it serviced. There are exhibits, presentations, along with lectures and events that will help you appreciate the area’s history and heritage. The Museum is conveniently located insider of Planters Exchange at 204 2nd Street NW.
Long a favored shopping destination in the Southeast region, it is now working hard to present an artistic vision highlighted by the many new murals being painted throughout downtown. Currently there are six major building murals and six quilt murals. These murals are depicting a little of both the history of Havana as well as some depiction of the future. FUN is what you experience when you walk the pedestrian friendly streets of downtown Havana and visit its eclectic mix of shops, restaurants and galleries. The experience is enhanced by the artistic expressions portrayed in these new murals. For more information, go to https://www.havanamainstreet.com/copy-of-projects
Havana has embraced bicycling and has included their future vision as a Trail Town in the Town’s master plan. In addition to the friendly bicycle ride every Wednesday at 6pm starting at Hops De Vine, Havana is host to the annual Havana Hills Ride in February. The Ride has three very challenging rides of 25, 48, and 88 miles with up to 3,300 feet of elevation. There are two faces to Havana riding, the Hills and the Flats. The Hills are a watershed to Little River. They have always been the local’s training roads for Six Gap and Mount Mitchell. The Master’s National Championship was held there twice. Also, the Havana Hills Ride has been selected as a Haute Routes training ride. More information and bike riding route maps can be found at https://www.havanamainstreet.com/copy-of-bike-routes
This past April, Havana was selected to host a national Airstream rally. There were 70 Airstream rigs parked throughout the downtown area for three days. Havana offered them a wide range of activities while they were here—from wine tastings and luncheons to lectures at the Shade Tobacco Museum. Plans are in the works to host this event again next year.
Havana Main Street has kicked off the quilt mural trail in Gadsden County. Six new quilt murals were presented at Havana’s first quilt show in November 2018. These murals depict classic quilts and are planned to be presented throughout the year at Havana, Quincy and Chattahoochee Main Street organizations in Gadsden County. In September 2019, Havana will host a second quilt show joining with the Gadsden Arts Center in Quincy which will be having a classic quilt display in their galleries from late September through December.
The Smithsonian came to the Havana Shade Tobacco Museum in downtown Havana. The Smithsonian exhibit on Rural America was here from March 24 - May 4. This exciting and detailed exhibit explores how rural American communities have changed in the twentieth century. Havana was very excited to be chosen to host this exhibit. We are excited to continue our relationship with the Smithsonian by bringing in more exhibits. Stay tuned for more info.
